Star Trek fans Rejoice! If you’re as nerdy as us (we know that there are a lot you closet nerds out there), it’s probably time to check out the search engine, Bing because it’s just added the official language of Star Trek’s favourite aliens, the Klingon’s to it’s translation engine.

Now, we’re fairly sure it’s a good little publicity stunt for the new Star Trek film coming out very soon (which I’m hanging to see mind you!) but ever since I was a little kid, I wanted to learn Klingon. With the help of Bing Translate, I can now convert English into Klingon and vice versa and even whole websites!

Taking a cue from one of my favourite tech blogs, Mashable, we’ve translated our Stargate Group website into Klingon! Check out the screen shot below.

Stargates Home page translated into Klingon!

So go unleash your inner nerd and check it out for yourself. You never know when you’ll need to translate into Klingon.

You feel like it’s just one of those days and everything seems to be going wrong with your systems. You can’t log onto your computer because you’ve got the dreaded ‘blue screen of death’, and now you are worried that you have lost everything.

In many cases, you will have lost everything: your emails, your client data and your working files… And why? Because you chose the wrong type of system to run your business.

Today’s brokers have several choices of system that they can use. Your first choice needs to be whether you put your business – the same business that you have toiled long and hard to build – at the mercy of your aggregator’s own in-house system, one built for the aggregator by the aggregator themself.

While you’ve chosen your aggregator because of the benefits they offer you, the development of software platforms is not their core business. Any in-house software is built to suit the masses of brokers under the aggregator’s banner, not necessarily your unique business.

This is where it pays to look around and to consider other independent software platforms and solutions. For example, you choose to run your business on the iMac yet your aggregator’s systems are built on Lotus Notes. Guess who gets left in the lurch… You do! Likewise, if you are keen on taking advantage of the most recent developments in point of sale tools using your iPad or tablet PC, but your aggregator lags behind in adopting technology, obviously Cloud-based systems are the way to go to keep your data safe.

But whose Cloud are you using – yours or your aggregator’s?

The list of problems associated with selecting the wrong type of IT platform to run your business is a long one, so do your homework and pick the solution that best suits your needs. And pick the solution that best meets your primary business goal: closing the deal with your customer.

The best way to do that is to select a system that specifically facilitates this purpose, uses the latest technologies (iPad and tablet integration into your CRM system) and eliminates the need to do multiple runs of data entry (single point of data collection at the initial point of sale), while ensuring you’re NCCP- and legislation-compliant in your customer dealings.

Now is the ideal time to contact your customer base and leverage the data in your Customer Relationship Management system to provide you immediate access to who and what is important for your customers.

Before implementing any CRM system into your organisation, keep in mind that the only way it is going to be a solid new business strategy is if you are prepared to take the time to understand and embrace your new system.

Calculating the return-on-investment from your CRM system should be one of the main decision factors for adoption of a CRM as some CRM technology can become quite costly when you factor in hardware, licensing and setup costs. Cloud based models are now the most popular form of CRM systems globally, enabling users to take advantage of lower costs and zero infrastructure requirements. Once you’ve made the decision to go down the path of CRM adoption, it is time to concentrate on what you want your CRM to do for both you and your clients.

So how do you move an old filing system(often in the form of an Excel spread sheet) into a new state of the art cloud based CRM? Sounds daunting to most brokers but rest assured it’s normally an easy process if you plan for it properly. Your data is the single greatest asset to your broking business and if you don’t protect it, then your business will fail. A seamless integration process will save you lots of sleepless nights and speed up the deployment of your new CRM system so make sure you CRM vendor has an articulated Data Migration program before you agree to sign up for their products.

In today’s market with immediate access and connectivity to our customers, if you’re not actively talking with them about opportunities to either save them money or enable them to earn more money, then your competitors possibly will. Databases and communications are paramount at this time when year-end festivities create the perfect opportunity to discuss more than just business.

Your business relationships drive better results and the broker- client connection MUST different.

My top 10 (add) tips for staying in touch with your customers to generate more business:

Pick up the phone! Take the time to make the conversation genuine and sincere. In this age of batch emailing and SMS, technology can only assist so much. We are people and personal interactions such as a phone call instead of an email are very compelling; remember our industry is all about relationships.

Establish a plan for what and how you will acknowledge your clients’ milestones, such as anniversary of settlement or expiration of fixed rate periods.

Ensure that your customer-facing team understand and deliver a consistent experience to each client, so they feel the impact of your efforts.

Remember the little things; they always make the difference between a surprise and an ‘OMG moment’, committing to memory birthdays, spouse/children’s names all build stronger connections.

Ensure your data is accurate, when was last time your client was contacted? Is it recorded? If you don’t know, you still have time to update this from your other notes sources.

Always save your customer interaction information. You never know when this could come in hand. A passing comment by a customer at a social gathering about wanting to purchase a new home next year should be diarised for follow up at a later date.

Keep a record of what your customers’ interests are. Record them in your system. Birthdays are a basic but often overlooked date. Easy to do and once saved, very hard to forget.

It may be useful to set up calendar reminders for this and have a consistent response across your team. Some clients even go as far as having a snail mail card posted 2 days prior with an email and phone call on the day. True customer service.

Go the extra mile for your customer. Offer them other services in addition to a mortgage. Never underestimate the value to your client of the “little extras” on offer.

And always remember your ABCs – always be communicating!

In today’s day and age, more and more users are turning to smart phones and tablet devices in their day to day lives.

Mobile consumption of video, web and “apps” are becoming more and more the norm as we sit down to watch TV on our tablets and laptops in between checking our emails, chatting on Skype, multi-posting on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, often simply posting “Watching TV, nothing on at the moment” in as succinct a method as possible.

While our private lives are crossing into more public lives and we consume information on our mobile devices, what about actually working on our mobile devices?

Everyone is pretty familiar with the usual scene of seeing someone checking their phones while waiting for public transport; friends hanging out ‘online’ together while sitting next to each other; let’s be honest, we’ve all been caught out checking our emails when we should be lavishing more attention on our loved ones.

But who is familiar with the business person reaching for their mobile device in order to process your home loan?

This is not the most common practice seen today and a strong correlation needs to be drawn to what is considered the social norm for both our personal and professional lives.

While it’s ok to be seen writing a full length novel in an email, who hasn’t said the line, ‘just give me two seconds to write this email honey’, is it ok to be seen completing an entire application form on your mobile?

With the advent of larger screen devices, such as iPad’s, various Android and Windows based tablets and Playbooks, it’s now becoming more and more common to sit in a meeting and reach for your tablet rather than get the laptop out, find a power source and hope your slow dongle gets you online.

The younger generation are the next home owners, the next home BUYERS and they are the ones that need to be impressed with the services that we offer today.

With the average teenager now consuming more information in one day than our parents did in a year, it’s no wonder that these next home owners want things done yesterday.

Don’t be afraid to embrace the new technologies on offer, adapt to the ever changing technology landscape and provide state of the art service to all prospective borrowers, regardless of the generation gap.

It gives me great pleasure to announce that the Stargate Group has won the 2011 MFAA (Mortgage & Finance Association of Australia) Excellence Award in the category of Best Support Services Provider. This award is the highest accolade for any service provider in the industry and acknowledges excellence in service provision.

While there were a number of other support providers in the running, Stargate was chosen as the back-to-back winner for providing consistent enhancements to support offerings to customers in order to enhance the mortgage industry as a whole.

This is the third time in 4 years that we have won this award, having also been named the best service provider in the industry in 2010 and 2007. It represents a continuation of the elite service levels that Stargate has been renowned for providing and is a true reflection of the time and effort that has been put into making Stargate the best services provider in the industry.

A recent Stargate survey has highlighted that more than two-thirds (72%) of the 365 broker respondents expressed confusion and concern over hosted software applications and the security implications of their data under such a setup.

While broker acceptance of cloud-based solutions is growing, many are yet to understand the benefits that hosted solutions can offer over traditional on-premise solutions.

Despite massive investments into hosted infrastructure by industry powerhouses such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon, this gap in Broker understanding may prevent many from recognising the significant cost savings that the cloud can provide, possibly at the expense of acquiring new business because of a dependence on existing, out-dated on-premise solutions.

“Using cloud-based solutions can make a lot of sense in this day and age. Rather than buying and maintaining your own machines, why not take advantage of the huge investment that some of the world’s largest companies are making. Microsoft has literally acres of internet accessible servers, monitored by massive teams of engineers” says Brett Spencer, CEO Stargate Group.

“Maintaining your own systems can be hard. Many brokers are unable to grow their business properly due to constraints in their IT platforms. With installed software that runs on basic servers, many underestimate the need for future growth and plan for today only. When it comes time to grow, the costs can be prohibitive by having to upgrade old servers and software. Using the cloud takes care of this for them. Scalability and reliability are two of the biggest benefits of hosted solutions. Pay for what you use, scale up when you need it and pull back when you don’t.” Brett added.

Many brokers are already seeing the benefits to hosted applications. Online loan processing is becoming more commonplace and is simply another type of cloud-based solution. While the uptake of online loan processing and customer management solutions is on the rise, many brokers still continue to insist on keeping their back-office ‘on-premise’
.

“Moving your entire office to the cloud can realise some pretty big savings. With the release of Google docs a while ago, many realised that the need for software installed on your machines was simply more than what they needed to process a simple document. With the impending release of Office 365, brokers can recognise the costs savings of only needing to pay $5 per user per month for hosted exchange servers and they know that they can rely on having a 99.9% uptime.”

“Like many others, we’ve invested heavily into providing rock solid equipment to ensure our systems remain secure and available when our users need it and give them the confidence and proven record of performance over the past 15 years. Brokers need to understand that this method is safe, reliable and secure. Compare this approach to if you had all your data on a laptop and it was stolen or broken, where would you be then? With hosted, always-on solutions, your data will always be there.” Brett concluded.

In the first Stargate Product Popularity Index (PPI) survey conducted with Brokers, Commonwealth Bank’s Rate Saver home loan has proven the most popular product with Brokers during October. A survey of 1500 Brokers reveals that the CBA Rate Saver product is almost 3 times more popular than its nearest rival product from NAB Homeside.

Over 14% of all loans written by respondents went to the CBA Rate Saver product, which shows that the product is hitting the right nerve with both Brokers and Consumers. Even though the average loan size for the CBA Rate Saver was below the national average at only $314,000, the popularity with brokers is unmistaken. Whilst its nearest rival product at NAB Homeside only account for 5% of loans written in September, their average loan size was much larger at an average of $416,000 per loan.M/p>

Brett Spencer, Stargate CEO, “It’s clear that based on the results of this survey that both CBA and NAB have developed very strong products that are resonating well with Brokers using our Symmetry loan processing and customer management platform, particularly given they have access to over 1000 products from 40 different lenders”.

The Product Popularity Index will be published monthly by Stargate and will outline the 2 most popular products submitted by Brokers each month. Stargate provides its Symmetry loan processing platform to over 2000 mortgage brokers who have processed over $350Billion in mortgages.

Footnote: With the larger than expected response by CBA to the RBA decision to raise interest rates by 25 basis points yesterday, and with NAB and other lenders yet to announce their responses, it will be interesting to see the impact on the popularity of respective products in the Symmetry portfolio. The results will be published in the next Product Popularity Index due out 1 December, 2010.
